PLACES TO VISIT
Scenes from Sligo County Sligo County and the surrounding areas of Donegal and Leitrim boast some of the most breathtaking scenery in Ireland. The famous Benbulben mountain, which shadows the grave of the W.B. Yeats, lies just to the north of Sligo town. The stony Ox mountain range and Knocknarea (atop which sits a large cairn marking the grave of the legendary Celtic warrior, Queen Maedbh) flank the town's other sides.

The ancient megalithic tombs at Carrowmore are an archealogical treasure-trove, while more recent history can be observed in the outlying areas, such as Parkes castle, or St. Molaise's monastery on Inishmurray island.

There are at least four fine beaches in Sligo county and the area is littered with lakes and waterfalls. No wonder Yeats dubbed it 'the land of heart's desire'.
